Beech battenboard

Description and usage

One of our key products is beech battenboard, made of processed squared beech strips glued into a solid wooden board. Such boards are strong and firm, which makes them perfect for high-quality furniture, interior decorative items such as staircases and window sills, or supporting structures.

Examples of use

  • 19 mm: front furniture panels, window sills, stair risers
  • 27 mm: furniture frames, window sills, stair risers, treads for concrete staircases
  • 40–45 mm: kitchen and other worktops, stair treads, doors

The colour unity of the individual wood strips in the board determines a quality class from A to D.

Quality classes

Class A/B

A: the front
The surface is of the same colour and shade. Not allowed: heartwood streaks, bird's eyes over 3 mm in diameter, knots, signs of wet rot, blue stains, noticeable discoloration, plaining defects. The battenboard is technically perfect, with no marks of open saw teeth and with joints properly pressed together, with no gluing defects, open chinks, etc.

B: the back
The surface can be of different shades but is still technically perfect. Not allowed: heartwood streaks, knots, blue stains, stains caused by stacking and interlayers, plaining defects. No marks of open saw teeth or gluing defects. Minor discolorations and putty corrections can be allowed in a limited amount. Boards of this quality class are made of strips clean on all four sides.

Class B/B

Same as class A/B, this quality class is made of strips clean on all four sides. A darker shade of the material is allowed; so are sporadic discolorations after drying and healthy overgrown bird's eyes up to 3 mm in diameter. Black and brown heartwood share, black streaks, and knots are not allowed. In all other respects, the same criteria apply here as to the back B-side of the A/B class

Class B/C

The front is of the same quality as the previous B-classes. The back can have unlimited share of heartwood, overgrown bird's eyes up to 3 mm, and sporadic slight spots. This class has no black heartwood streaks and is technically perfect; it is made of strips clean on at least one side.

Class C/C

The front can be of different shades; a share of black and brown heartwood and healthy overgrown bird's eyes up to 3 mm are allowed; no black streaks or big knots. The back can have unlimited share of black and brown heartwood, black streaks, healthy overgrown bird's eyes up to 3 mm, but no knots. It is technically perfect.

Class C/D

Boards of this quality class are made of strips of blue or grey shades. Front sides can have a bigger share of black heartwood and knots. This class is still technically perfect. Only complaints concerning technical issues will be accepted for this quality class. Although we produce boards of this class only in a limited amount, they still have the same mechanical properties as the previous classes.

Production technology

We make two kinds of beech battenboard: a so called jointed battenboard, where individual strips are attached lengthwise, and battenboard made of continuous strips. The width of the board is made of several strips (both jointed and continuous). The battenboard is manufactured in compliance with standard DIN EN 12775, “Solid wood panels”. Finished boards are sanded on both sides according to the customer's requirements (belt sander with grain size from 40 to 100). Our current yearly production is about 2,500 m3, and we have 5 modern Mühlböck drying kilns at our disposal.

Dimensions of jointed and continuous battenboard:

  • length of continuous battenboard: 900 – 1,300 – 1,500 – 1,600 mm.
  • length of jointed battenboard: up to 6,000 mm.
  • width: up to 1,200 mm.
  • thickness: 27/28/30, 39/40/41, 45 mm.
  • tolerance of width and length: -0.0 mm / +5.0 mm, of thickness: +/-0.2 mm
  • width of strips: 38 – 46 mm

The adhesive used to glue the battenboard, Rakoll GXL-3, is certified for group B3 required by DIN 68602, and classified as D3 by the European standard EN 205. The moisture content of the boards at the time of shipping is 8 +/- 2 % maximum. The boards are packed on pallets and protected on all sides by polythene foil against weather conditions. The average weight of the boards is 700 kg/m3.

Recommended storage conditions:

  • Recommended storage conditions
